Astartes of charity marine, and a chaos havoc

A couple of new painted miniatures. The first one is for the Astartes of Charity fundraiser for Cancer Research, which I had the pleasure of contributing toward along with 99 others.

This guy's been kicking around for a while and I finally got around to finishing him.

Astartes of Charity Ultramarine complete

Finished him off. Excuse the glare, it's a very bright day.

Someone else painted a pair of yellow stripes on their marine, so I copied it. The grenade is purple to match the colour of the charity.

Cork base. I wasn't brave enough to try glow from the lens, this time.

Devastator Squad marking. Shoulder pad repurposed from Chaos marine (the whole guy had to be scraped together from the bits box).

Astartes of Charity: 100 painters, 100 Space Marines, for cancer research

I'm delighted to be a part of a spontaneous group of 100 or so painters on facebook who are going to do what the blog entry title says. I've got randomly assigned a standard marine with standard equipment, so I'm trying to do the best I can by using interesting components and as good a paintjob as I can manage.

The camera is HARSH! I am much happier seeing the miniature a couple of feet away on the table surface! It looks great there!

I also tried some freehand on the shoulder, and scope lenses. The eye lenses are frustrating me though.

Mantic and Reaper Bones Skeletons, and Space Hulk

Painted up some more Reaper Bones miniatures and some Mantic Skeletons. The Reaper Bones ones were a bit of a pain to base because of the 'broccoli' base they come with (I don't know why they're called broccoli bases, they taste nothing like it).

I have some Mantic Skeletons after mistakenly stealing a sprue of them from a Mantic stall a few years ago. They're nice to paint, and much cheaper than the GW equivalent. If I were a Fantasy player I'd run a horde of these things along with their zombies.

I also got a game called 'Space Hulk' and am trying to convince the GF to play it.

Later, I took the rulebook to the beach just to take this next silly picture:

Resin weapons and miniatures

My order arrived at last.

Pictures for your judgement.

Originally I was thinking about 10 Havocs with autocannons, but a lot of these pieces look very tempting to attach and paint up.

Lastly, some kriegers and Traitor Guard to act as cultists with autocannons.

(Just a dry fit)

Fallen Dark Angels conversions

I recently moved to another country and had to go without my modelling stuff for a while.

I ended up buying another starter set, and repurposed the Dark Angels models. It was a lot of fun! I'm glad to be back painting and modelling again after a break.

The pictures are pretty naff, I'll take some more when the weather's a bit better.

For the 'Tzeentchian', a took a scheme taken from a player at my old club.

They're also very shiney because I only have gloss varnish.

More on the way!

Chaos Cultist / Rogue Trader mercenaries kitbash unit

In anticipation of the new Chaos Cultists due to be released with the 6th edition starter set, I have been scratch building some pirate types to accompany the Space Marines.

I don’t have a clear vision for fluffing the force, so I’m concentrating on making the models as versatile as possible. So these ‘cultists’ don’t have imperial markings, but also aren’t slavering chaos-star waving fanatics either. I imagine them to be ganger scum, or opportunists under the employ of a rogue trader. They could fit a number of roles because of the deliberate lack of markings.

They are a combination of Warhammer fantasy empire militia, catachans, and some mantic orc bits and fantasy chaos warriors. There’s also a couple of Toy Story soldier heads.

I have concentrated on trying to build them with believable poses, making sure the face and the leading foot are pointing in the same direction. In the past I’ve been quite slapdash when putting models together, and ended up looking like mental disco dancers.

I've had to have a bit of a guess at their equipment. I don't think lasguns counting as autoguns is much of a stretch, and those wielding hand weapons and pistols will probably join the rest of the lasgunners, as I've heard assault is quite weak in 6th ed (not that I've played enough 40k to make any real judgment).

I've also put together a heavy bolter for the marines squad, which I will increase to 10 models so as to warrant a rhino.

Ramshackle's 'Iron Grumbler' is of comparable size to Games Workshop's rhino, so I have ordered 3. They take a little while to process orders as everything is done by one man, but I am looking forward to getting my hands on them as I think they'd suit the slightly weird looking marines.

Bits and pieces

I've been out in the sunshine taking lots of photographs, hence three updates in one day. Some are models I've posted before, but with the pictures taken properly.

Old style terminator from years ago. Fun fact; no official marine chapters have an orange paint scheme. I to call him the tangemarine.

Experimenting with foil as a backdrop instead of paper.

Assault on Black Reach Space Marine captain, with power sword. Last picture was terribad, so redid it.

Still playing with Oyumaru to cast bits and bobs. I'm in need of more old fashioned backpacks for my chaos marine kitbashing;

Daleks, Greenskins and bits and bobs

Several things that have been in need of finishing off for a long time now.

Some Daleks from the DR Who magazine.

They are dirt cheap, probably about 12p each. They do require some cleanup as they aren't as finely made as regular miniatures, but they do scale up nicely with 28mm minis and I am very happy with them.

Some Gretchen, from Games Workshop. I bought these because I wanted to try casting more small, single piece models with the Oyumaru.

While the results from attempting to cast were naff (my fault, didn't do it properly), but good enough to get an extra model and an interesting trampled figure on one of the bases;

At Christmas I received a pack of the OOP plastic Chaos Warriors, so the resin cast with the warped face got a new head.

I had a go at giving a space marine a less rounded look. I was trying to make something in power armour, but wasn't a space marine. Like a renegade, or a mercenary or something.

Finally, I finished off the Space Marine Captain I had left over from the last Black Reach set. His face looks darker than it should because there's a big annoying shadow across his face.
